dc.description.abstractPeroxidases (E.C. 1.11.1.7) are heme-containing oxidoreductase enzymes, which have a newlinepotential to oxidise a wide range of organic and inorganic substance in the presence of hydrogen newlineperoxide. They are widely used as a crucial ingredient in reagents for clinical diagnosis and newlinenumerous scientific investigations. The most developed field for their commercial and newlineindustrial application is in analytical diagnostic, for example in biosensors and immunoassays. newlineMoreover, peroxidases are being used as bleaching inducer in the detergent and paper and pulp newlineindustry, diagnosis kit development industries, in anti-microbial applications for removing newlinearomatics from waste streams and as a catalyst for oxidative coupling, for example as a catalyst newlinefor dough preparation. Recently, attention is focused on the use of peroxidase as catalyst for newlineselective oxygenation and as mild polymerization catalyst. Typically, harmful aromatic newlinechemicals can be found in wastewaters, released from industries such as coal, phenol effluents, newlinepolymers, resins, textiles, pulp and paper and petroleum refining factories that make iron and newlinesteel, and agricultural activities. Since many of these compounds were released into the newlineenvironment in recent decades and are both poisonous and carcinogenic, they have raised newlinesignificant environmental concerns. Therefore, a variety of effective methods, including newlinephysical adsorption, extraction, ozonation, chemical oxidation and electrochemical treatments newlinehave been developed to remove these contaminants from the environment. However, these newlinemethods have several drawbacks, including, low efficiency, high costs and the production of newlinetoxic by-products. The treatment of phenolic wastewater with bio-affinity layered peroxidase newlineturned the enzyme-based process into a more economically viable approach. Therefore, newlineenzymatic treatment becomes more convenient and useful for phenol and other pollutants newlineremoval.
