Abstract: | newlineAccumulation of waste is a global problem. The amount of waste deposited keeps increasing with every passing year. It is a known fact that organic waste is degradable, but many valuable resources are lost as largely landfilling is practiced. Though a part of it is composted, the market value for it is low. In the present work, organic waste was collected, dried, and pulverized in a ball. which dried powdered sample was characterized for elemental analysis, FTIR, TG-DTG, and HPLC to determine the presence of organic matter, functional groups, and purity. The results indicated the presence of cellulose, it was converted directly to Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) resin with DMSO and water at 150°C in acidic medium. The FTIR spectroscopy showed the presence of OH stretching vibrations, C-H bending, and C=C. The structure of HMF was confirmed by NMR. The HPLC analysis showed an increase in purity of HMF from 51% to 69.75% and the purity by crystallization was 92%. Hydroxymethyl furfural resin was used as a substitute for partial replacement of formaldehyde. Hydroxymethyl furfural resin was added to the ureaformaldehyde resin to develop urea Hydroxymethylfurfural formaldehyde resin, where a part of the formaldehyde was replaced by HMF. newline |
