Abstract: | Marriages within Indian society are experiencing notable transformations, driven by aspirations for a more affluent and secure lifestyle, prompting individuals to seek settlement in foreign countries for better prospects. The allure of a luxurious lifestyle abroad has led Indian parents to actively pursue such matrimonial alliances for their children, reflecting the pervasive influence of materialism on societal values, ethics, and traditions associated with marriage. The incidence of women being abandoned by Non- Resident Indian (NRI) husbands is alarmingly high and escalating. This study aims to investigate the extent of this phenomenon and its underlying causes. The situation is particularly dire in rural Punjab, although urban and educated segments of the population are not immune to its effects. Even daughters of well-placed bureaucrats have fallen victim to this distressing trend. Historically, such occurrences have been stigmatized, with little recourse for victims beyond informal mediation by family and acquaintances. Given the complexity and urgency of this issue, there is a pressing need for a legal framework that can both deliver justice to victims and serve as a preventive measure for Indian nationals. This research endeavours to delve deeply into the complexities of the situation, identifying the root causes of this social problem and proposing legal remedies to address it effectively. newline |
