Abstract: | Bangalore city is now witnessing uncontrolled urbanization and population growth, leading to changes in land use pattern, development of roads and other infrastructure posing great pressure on lakes. The objective of the present study is to analyze the effects of urbanization on lakes, on water quality, aquatic health, social attitudes, and to measure their protection status. newlineThe study being more qualitative, emphasized on natural settings that surrounded them in everyday life. A Case study Method was adopted for the study. The main tactics used are observation, field studies and structured interviews besides, a field study and systematic random sampling. Out of 81 live lakes in Bangalore district, 8 Lakes with potential for rejuvenation from Koramangala Challghatta Valley series were chosen for the study. newlineThe methodology of the study included the collection and analysis of secondary data pertaining to land use and population; interpretation of satellite imageries to analyze changes in land use and other spatial parameters; seasonal study of water quality and biological diversity by sample collection and laboratory testing; and field investigations. newlineThe current research project is based on the analysis of the morphological characteristics of lakes, the socio historical information, the direct observation of the study area and face to face interviews. The various site visits and questionnaires, observation and noting and collection of photographic data, were compiled to form an exploratory environmental inventory. A detailed descriptive analysis further paved away for comparative case study analysis . newlineThe importance of the study in identifying possible solutions to water pollution, encroachment, water harvesting, improving water quality, ecological mapping etc., are highlighted. Recommendations for future studies and importance of Conservation and Restoration of lakes and its values and possible remedial measure to protect the water body are emphasized. newline newline |
