Abstract: discusses the background of the research focusing on the emission of toxic pollutants from several sources and its impacts on affecting human health. Followed by basic introduction of different types of gas sensors and the potential characteristics for an ideal gas sensor were discussed. A brief literature overview on current nanostructured materials employed to develop effective sensors towards NO2 gas detection were discussed. The significance of the material selection criteria and the strategies to improve the sensing performance were presented. The last section of this chapter describes the objective of the thesis, in which, we have developed WS2 based nanostructures for effective detection of NO2 gas molecules at room temperature (RT). Also, the exfoliation of commercial WS2 and the performance of metal oxide-based nanostructures towards NO2 gas molecules were discussed for comparison purposes with the prepared WS2 nanostructures newline
