Abstract: The increasing advent of antibiotic resistance has rekindled the hope of scientists for alternative therapies to antibiotics. Bacteriophage-borne endolysins have been explored extensively as alternative therapeutic agents because of their potent antibacterial activity against antibiotic-sensitive as well as resistant strains. However, because of their exceptionally short half-time and rapid clearance from the body, a need has been felt to overcome this problem for their in-vivo application. Our study demonstrates the efficiency of mucoadhesive chitosan nanoparticle-based endolysin delivery system in the treatment of murine pneumonia. The present study is a first of its kind, and this opens new horizons for researchers to look for other endolysin delivery strategies which may enhance the in-vivo antibacterial potential of endolysins by increasing their bioavailability, in-vivo half-life and targeted delivery at the site of action. newline
