Abstract: This thesis work presents the systematic study of structural, optical, electronic and magnetic properties of pure and transition metal-doped ZnO nanostructures for optoelectronic and spintronics application. The electronic structural properties investigated through synchrotron radiation based Near-edge and Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS/EXAFS) has been correlated with the defect states or vacancies contributing to intrinsic exchange interactions via formation of bound magnetic polarons (BMP) and thus giving rise to room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Low energy ion-beam induced fabrication of transition metal doped ZnO thin films showing RTFM property has been presented. This work will definitely provides a pathway to develop the novel ZnO based dilute magnetic semiconductors for optical and spin based devices. newline
