The Novel of Saratchandra Chattopadhyay A Study in Feminine Sensibility

Abstract

Saratchandra Chattopadhyay has a great sense of feminine sensibility. Through his novels, he painted the heroines very beautifully. He has a great sense for the women characters. Through them, he depicted the condition of the society of his time. In his time, many social evils like child marriage, poverty, feudalism, polygamy, illiteracy, patriarchy etc. were at their peak. Women were the worst sufferers of these evils. The problems of women were shown skillfully in his novels and short stories. The novels such as Parineeta, Charitraheen, Grihadaha, Devdas depict the women who are in shackles of patriarchal society. They are desirous to set themselves free from the societal dogmas, taboos and bars. In the novel Charitraheen, the female protagonist argues that the societal dogmas and rules change with time. Those, which are considered very necessary to follow today, may change with time. newline
