Abstract: | Ground vibration is a geotechnical problem in regions which are adjacent to sources of newlinedynamic loading such as construction activities, traffic etc. The detrimental effects of newlineground vibration include loss of serviceability of structures, structural damage and newlinehuman discomfort. Railway is a major source of ground vibration in areas adjacent to newlinethe track structures. During ground vibration, major transfer of energy occurs in the newlineform of Rayleigh surface waves. In the case of high-speed railway, dynamic newlineamplification of ground vibration during train movement can happen in soft soil newlinedeposits, depending on the Rayleigh wave (R-wave) velocity of the ground. This makes newlinethe Rayleigh wave velocity a significant parameter in analysing ground vibration. This newlineresearch focuses on the investigation of the ground vibration induced by semi high to newlinehigh-speed railways in the context of Rayleigh wave propagation in the soil medium. Considering the R-wave velocity of soil as a separate dynamic soil property, its accurate newlinedetermination is necessary for vibration analysis and mitigation. Presently there is no newlinelaboratory set up to measure the R- wave velocity of the soil directly. The present study newlineproposes a laboratory method and system, for evaluation of the R-wave velocity of soil newlineby utilizing vertically polarised piezo ceramic sensors. newline |
