Abstract: All Optical Networks employing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems can transmit data simultaneously at multiple carrier wavelengths or channels over a fiber in the optical domain. These transparent optical networks in absence of electrical regenerators reduce the overall network cost. Optical crossconnects (OXCs) are one of the most important components in these networks. The crossconnects suffer from crosstalk due to the different wavelength light path channels during the switching process leading to the deterioration in Bit Error Rate (BER) and hence in the system performance. The Quality of Service (QoS) in such networks can be guaranteed if the BER and the crosstalk induced power penalty is significantly reduced. In Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switched (GMPLS) optical networks, crosstalk tolerance and power penalty would be the critical issues as these parameters play important roles in defining the QoS and scalability of the network. Optical interconnects also replace the existing electronic interconnects for System-on-Chip (SoC) design and offer high bandwidth, low latency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. The integration density in optical interconnects is limited by the crosstalk noise. This thesis presents the study on impact of crosstalk and power penalty on the optical devices such as OXC, GMPLS based wavelength router, and Optical Networks-on-Chip (ONoC). The effect of accumulation of coherent crosstalk at different stages of OXCs has been investigated and analyzed for estimating blocking probabilities. Results of coherent and incoherent crosstalk are compared to identify their impact on the working of the crossconnect. Crosstalk and power penalty analysis for optical code-switched static wavelength routing WDM nodes of a GMPLS networks is carried out. The performance of the system is analyzed for coherent crosstalk, end-to-end bit error rate (e e BER), and the code length.
