dc.description.abstractThe present study titled the Making of a City: A History of Gurugram in the 19th and 20th century. The origin of the name Gurgaon is shrouded in Hindu Mythology. In the ancient times, the name Gurugram was originally said to be Guru-Gram that is Guru means Teacher , which is this case refers to Guru Dronacahrya and Gram means a Gaon . The village was gifted by the Pandavas and Kauravas to their Guru Dronacharya, and was therefore known as Guru-Gram. During Ancient period, Gurgaon had been identified as a small farming settlement with some religious importance. Later on, in the Colonial period it become a place of military importance and administrative headquarters and has by now developed as an important commercial and industrial area. It was post-Independence period specially the 1980and#8223;s that the town has experienced tremendous growth due to several factors, such as rehabilitation of refugees, established Maruti Udyog and planned sectoral development by Huda Urban Development Authority and private developers and rapid increase in the industrial activities along the Delhi-Jaipur, National Highway-8 road among others to reach its present proportions. The present research looks at the growth and development of Gurugram as an urban settlement from 1803-2011.what was the position of the town during the Colonial period and which were responsible for the development of the Gurugram in the 20th century. The period from 1803 marks the beginning of the Colonial period rule and the emergence of a new administration, economic and socio cultural process having deep impact on urbanization. The post- independence period was faced with new challenges and situations within a democratic framework and new plan and policy or economic structure. The changes in the urban pattern would also be variable in this study with a focus on Gurugram as a case study of the urban process. The study thoroughly examines an ancientand#8223; village changed into a Millennium city today. newline
