Abstract: Poverty Alleviation Programs in India is a complex and multidimensional concept which includes social, cultural, economic, political and geographic aspects. Eradication of poverty in Indian as a developing country remains a major challenge for the development of a country. Different states of India followed different policy prescriptions to eradicate national as well as state poverty. Punjab and Haryana both followed path of high agricultural growth by green revolution and somehow succeeded in eradication of poverty. Kerala had shown much interest in the development of human resource to reduce the level of poverty in the state. The West Bengal and the Union Territory Jammu and Kashmir had implemented land reforms and diversification of lands, empowered local self-government and implemented poverty alleviation programs to eradicate poverty from their respective areas. Poverty is related to low standard and low quality of life, malnutrition, low per capita calorie, unbalanced and unequal distribution of physical and human resources, unemployment and illiteracy among youth. Poverty in country is a big obstacle in the development of human resource to achieve a skilled and efficient workforce. Development has been appropriately conceptualized as a process which improves the quality of life. The development of science, technology and environment extends support to the process and quality of economic growth. Economic development is a process whereby an economy s real national income increases over a long period of time and if the rate of development is greater than rate of population growth, then per capita real income will increase. The concept of social development is inclusive of economic development but differs from it in the sense that it emphasizes the development of the totality of society in its economic, political, social and cultural aspects.
