Abstract: | Title - Efficacy of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Retz.) in experimental model of letrozole induced PCOS in rat. newlineBackground Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Retz.) is a magical and versatile drug. It is listed prominently in the Ayurvedic classical texts because of its extraordinary and wide spectrum actions on various conditions. It is a mild, safe and effective laxative. Modern researches have been proved Haritaki as contraceptive in males that significantly decrease androgen levels. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder by elevated levels of androgens. Anovulation, amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea, obesity and polycystic ovaries are significant phenotypes of PCOS. Thus T. chebula is selected as drug of choice for treatment of PCOS, and efficacy of the drug has been studied in this experiment. newlineAim and objective - The objective of present study is to analyses efficacy of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Retz.) in experimental model of letrozole induced PCOS in rat. newlineMaterial and Methods- Eight female wistar rats in 4 groups NC, STD, T1, and T2 respectively and 12 animals in DC group are assigned, Letrozole has given to animals other than NC group, 1mg/kg /day for 28 days to induce PCOS. After successful induction wistar rats then divide into 4 groups of DC, STD, T1 and T2. Clomiphene citrate is standard drug used for experiment, T1 is Haritaki aqueous extract, and T2 is Haritaki decoction, has treated orally according to groups for next 49 days. Body weight, food intake, estrus cycle, hormonal levels, biochemistry, haematology has been checked before and after treatment. Vaginal smear has been collected for microscopic observation, daily to study estrus changes. newlineObservations and Result- Based on all the analysis, the results obtained are comparable to the standard marketed drug Clomiphene citrate. |
