Abstract: | newline The British came to India to trade, and gradually they emerged as a political power with the newlinevictory at the battle of Plassey (1757). Soon after, they introduced new policies newline(administrative and economic), which the Indians disliked, which led to an increase in the discontentment among Indians towards the British, which later transformed into the revolt of 1857. Though the British suppressed the Great Revolt of 1857, its results were fruitful. In this Great Revolt, In addition to men, women also came forward in which the names of Rani Lakshmi Bai, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Rani Jindan Kaur, and Jhalkari Bai are remarkable. Whereas it is seen that in 1817, Bhima Bai Holkar was the first woman who could stand against the British for the very first time. After Twenty-Eight years of this Great Revolt in 1885, the quotIndian National Congressquot was established under the guidance of A.O. Hume. Until two decades after its establishment, congress leaders used to draft petitions and memoranda to fulfil newlinetheir demands by the British. newlineHowever, the division of Bengal proved to be the turning point in the political scenario of India. The partition of Bengal was to suppress the emerging political power and the influence of the educated intelligentsia. As a result, Bengal was the nerve centre of the Indian National Movement. |
