Abstract: | Hard machining is one of the major concerns in production and mechanical industry. The present research focuses on incorporation of electrorheological fluids for hard machining of EN24 alloy steel. On application of high voltage electrorheological fluids transform from viscous liquid to semi solid in milliseconds, which is also revocable on removal of the electric field. ER fluids are liquid suspensions made of silicates, silica polymers, metal oxides, or organics which are mixed in small quantity with insulating oil. Low concentration of dispersed particles is maintained in the fluid to preserve low viscosity in normal state i.e., with no electric field applied. The suspensions of the ER fluids are of micro or nano size dielectric particles. newlineApplication of magnetorheological damper for damping vibrations during hard turning to finish size is reported in the open literature. Research on application of electrorheological damper for hard machining is scarcely reported. Main objective of this research was to design and manufacture an electrorheological damper to suppress tool vibrations in turning and boring of hardened EN24 alloy steel. The research was aimed at minimizing cutting force, surface roughness, tool wear, vibration amplitude by adopting the electrorheological damper in hard machining of EN24 alloy steel. newline |
