Abstract: | Persons who are 60 years and above are addressed as geriatrics. Geriatrics hold a significant place in society. Some of the common problems they face are a decline in mental capacity, increased stress, and reduced efficiency in daily activities which affect their quality of life. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of relaxation techniques vis-à-vis Mind Sound Resonance Technique (MSRT) and Deep Relaxation Technique (DRT) on their mental efficiency, perceived stress, and activities of daily living. In this study, snowball and purposive sampling techniques were used. A total of 108 geriatrics were selected and they were further divided into three groups randomly i.e., MSRT-EGI, DRT-EGII, and Control Group (CG). Geriatrics were given MSRT or DRT intervention for 15 sessions as per their respective experimental groups, while CG continued with their routine activities. MSRT and DRT intervention techniques were developed by SVYand#256;Sand#256;. Standardized tools of PGI Battery Assessment of Mental Efficiency in Elderly, Perceived Stress Scale-10, and Activities of Daily Living were used to assess mental efficiency, perceived stress, and activities of daily living respectively for the collection of data. The findings of the study revealed that MSRT had a significantly positive effect on mental efficiency and perceived stress, while DRT had a more significant positive effect on perceived stress than MSRT. However, there was no significant improvement found in activities of daily living with either technique. Thus, it is concluded that MSRT is effective for improving mental efficiency whereas DRT is more effective for reducing perceived stress in geriatrics. The views of geriatrics in MSRT-EGI and DRT-EGII brought out that MSRT and DRT considerably benefitted the geriatrics in increasing mental efficiency, leading to performing their daily routine activities independently and in reducing perceived stress. |
