Effectiveness of dermaroller alone vs dermaroller with platelet rich plasma for acne scars a comparative clinical trial

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The most frequent and most distressing complication of acne is formation of atrophic acne scars. The patients are affected psychologically as these scars have a poor cosmetic outcome and are burdensome to treat. Dermaroller procedure has been demonstrated to be one of the effective techniques available for the treatment of acne scars leading to magnificent reduction in acne scars severity. Platelet-rich plasma is one of the latest method which also demonstrated to provide excellent results. newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two patients with atrophic acne scars were selected and divided into two groups with twenty-six patients in each group. The patients receiving treatment split into two subgroups: one received dermaroller treatment alone, while the remainder received a combination of dermaroller treatment and platelet-rich plasma. Both parties were provided with 6 meetings spaced one month apart. The scars were assessed using the Goodman and Baron quantitative grading system before the operation and following every subsequent session, including a series of images obtained to confirm the outcome. RESULTS: The trial was finished by all 52 subjects. The majority of those treated were between the age range of 25-30 years, since acne vulgaris is prevalent among young people, sometimes resulting in scarring. Males (67.3%) were affected more compared to females (32.69%) in this study in each the category. Both groups saw a notable decrease in the Goodman and Baron grading score. However, Group B had a more pronounced drop compared to Group A, making it statistically substantial. In this investigation, as well as other studies in the literature, we found that using a dermaroller with platelet-rich plasma is an effective therapy for reducing scars caused by acne. This treatment modality resulted in a substantial decrease in the Goodman and Baron grading score.
