The ever-increasing world population needs an increased agricultural yield of crop plants. Due to a limitation in arable land, enhancement of crops to ensure more production is the need of the hour. It is being estimated that by 2050, there will be about 9.7 billion people globally as opposed to the 8 billion now, requiring about a 70% to100% increase in the yield of the major food crops to match the increase in requirements for plant-based proteins for animal feed (increased meat consumption), and a surge in the requirements for plant-based fuels (UN DESA, 2022; Simkin et al., 2019). Feeding the ever-growing world population requires a dynamic change in our approach for agricultural practices, year on year increase in yields of the major crops in many parts of the world have plateaued, and new technological solutions must be explored to develop higher yielding varieties, to maintain the food supply (Fischer and Edmeades, 2010; Ray et al., 2013; Long et al., 2015; Ort et al., 2015; Simkin et al., 2019). One way to go about it is by enhance the photosynthetic efficiency of crop plants via transgenic approach, which ultimately leads to increased biomass and yield. newlineLife on earth is powered by the process of capture and conversion of solar newline
