Abstract: | Metallo drugs have been developed both as diagnostic and therapeutic tools for several diseases. Cancer, one of the most dangerous diseases, is rapidly becoming the leading cause of death worldwide. Cisplatin and platinum-based drugs are the most widely used anticancer chemotherapeutic agents. Although they are effective in treating a variety of cancers, their potential efficacy is limited by their dose-limiting nephrotoxicity and the development of drug resistance in patients. Therefore, many transition metal complexes have been synthesized and investigated for their anticancer actions in an effort to increase the efficacy and to reduce the side effects. Thus, to improve the efficacy of therapeutic agents, it is imperative and of fundamental to investigate the interactions between metal complexes and DNA or proteins. DNA and proteins are the most important molecular targets for metal-based drugs. BSA has been used as a protein model due to its water-soluble nature, excellent binding properties and structural similarity to human serum albumin. Cobalt and nickel play an important role in the development of metal-based drugs from biological perspectives. newline |
