Abstract: The thesis consolidates the novel methodologies for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds in water based solutions using radicals of persulfate. The basic mechanisms of persulfate mediated reactions are i) generation of free radicals through hydrogen atom transfer from substrate or hydrogen atom transfer followed by decarboxylation and ii) one electron oxidation of substrate. The radicals formed after first step can further propagate the synthesis by radical addition, radical cyclization, or radical coupling pathways. We utilized the concept of sulfate radical anion formation as well as its use as an oxidant for the synthesis of several heterocyclic compounds in aqueous solutions. newline
