Abstract: | Concrete gravity dams are constructed for storing water for use of human beings for newlinedrinking purpose, irrigation purpose and generation of electricity. Hence it can be newlinetreated as the back bone of development of a country. At the same time safety of newlineconcrete gravity dam during an earthquake is a serious concern considering the newlinequantity of water stored behind it and environmental impacts in the case of failure. newlineHence to ascertain that the dam structure is capable of resisting earthquake loading, a newlinedetailed investigation on the response due to seismic ground motion is carried out. newlineThe cross-sectional profile and materials properties of the dam, mechanical properties newlineof the foundation rock, reservoir structure interaction and rock structure interaction newlineare the factors effecting the dynamic characteristics and seismic response of the dam. newlineIn addition to that, response of the structure is also highly influenced by the newlinecharacteristics of the earthquake. It is noticed that existing codes, standards and newlineguidelines are not properly addressed the influence of characteristics of seismic newlineloading on dam structures. newline |
