Abstract: | Cities in the post-industrial era have been more than just engines of economic growth. newlineThey have grown spatially under various physical pressures of expansion, master plans, transitoriented development, regeneration, and redevelopment schemes. newlineThe first chapter of the study gives the newlinebackground to the concern of urban form crises at the global level and the resilience newlinestrategy highlighted by SDGs for the cities. newlineVarious cities have responded to these urban newlineshocks in their respective manner, for example Mumbai had linear growth and cities newlinelike Ahmedabad had concentric growth. These newlineurban growths were highly dependent on the newlinecity s physical form and its urban core. Here the urban core refers to the urban villages located in the peri-urban areas as well as the core heritage area of the city. The adaptability of the urban core towards newlinethese changes and shocks depends on its plasticity and resilience (ability to change). This study examines the growth of the urban core concerning urban shocks and develops a conceptual framework to understand its ability to be a resilient city. Resilience has been largely pondered newlineconcerning climate change and its mitigation. However, not much studies have been done on newlineintegrating spatial growth concerning strategic and planned resilient growth. This study adds to the knowledge of urban resilience by preventing the urban decay of dense urban cores. These urban cores become stagnant, and thus are suspected of haphazard growth which is neither sustainable nor resilient. As contemporary cities grow in scale, their extent to resist shock and newlinestress, adapt to change, or regenerate is unpredictable and is the result of various economic and social factors. A conceptual framework to pin down spatial changes and their relation to resilience shall help to plan for urban resilience at various spatial scales. This research develops an urban resilient framework that decodes the spatially resilient strategies of the neighborhoods considering the identified spatial attributes. |
