Abstract: | Of all tasks of management, managing the human component is the central and most important task because all else depends upon how well it is done. Everything from hiring to firing comes under the ambit of human resource management. Technological revolution, globalized competition, demographic changes, the information revolution and trends towards a service society have changed the rules of the game significantly. In such a scenario, organizations with similar sets of resources gain competitive advantage only through effective and efficient management of human resources. In an environment where government organisations are infamous for maladies like red tape-ism, formalisation etc, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation changed the face of urban transportation in Delhi and the National Capital Region well within time and cost limit. The present study found DMRC to have a competent workforce recruited from wide sources, selected through a stringent process and woven in an efficient organisational structure. However, training was not found to be paid adequate attention to at DMRC. Most of the workforce was found to be satisfied with their job, primarily because of the sense of pride they felt in being part of an organisation that gathered accolades from all quarters. The burden of maintaining this prestige was however found to be causing a sense of disenchantment in a few departments related directly with the operation and maintenance of Delhi Metro. This wave of discontentment needed to be arrested in order to prevent DMRC derailing from its track of success. newline |
