Abstract: | newline Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases known to mankind. A newlinecontinuous uncontrolled growth of cells is termed cancer. A tumor or newlineneoplasm is an abnormal growth of tissue. It can be benign tumor or a newlinemalignant cancerous tumor. A tumor is localized while cancer has the newlinepotential to spread (or metastasize) to other parts of the body. A tumor is newlinetransformed from an avascular state to a vascular state with the help of tumor newlineangiogenesis. Tumor angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from newlineexisting vessels. A tumor has the capacity to sustain only up to 1mm-2mm in newlinediameter by the process of diffusion from nearby blood vessels. Once it newlinereaches the critical size, it starts secreting certain chemicals like Tumor newlineAngiogenesis Factors (TAFs), certain enzymes like Matrix newlineMetalloProteinases (MMPs) and many other factors. These initiate the tumor newlineangiogenesis process. Extracellular Matrix Metallo Proteinases Inducer newline(EMMPRIN) / Cluster of Differentiation 147 (CD147) is a transmembrane newlineglycoprotein that exists in large quantities on the surface of tumor cells. newlineCD147 boosts the levels of TAFs through its receptor and additionally, newlineCD147 induces the concentration of MMPs. Hence the impact of CD147 on newlinetumor angiogenesis requires a thorough understanding. CD147 also plays a newlinerole in vasculogenic mimicry which is an alternative pathway for a tumor to newlinegrow. newline |
