dc.description.abstract | Composites were created to address high strength-to-weight ratio, hardness, and heat resistance requirements due to advances in material science and rising demand in the automotive and aerospace industries. To be more specific, composites are materials in which the desirable features of different materials are blended through the use of mechanical or metallurgical bonding. The term quotcompositequot refers to a substrate structure made up of a separate element (reinforcement) dispersed in a constant phase (matrix) and abstracting its distinguishing features from the properties of their constituent parts, the morphology or design of the elements, and the boundary properties (interfaces) between the various parts. As a matrix substrate for MMCs, aluminium and its alloys have gained the maximum recognition while the most prevalent reinforcement being SiC. Composites of aluminium matrix belong to the category of high-performance aluminium based material systems. The characteristics of aluminium matrix composites can indeed be tailored by matrix, reinforcement and production route variants to the specifications of different commercial application. newline | |
