dc.description.abstract | newline In the medical field, sutures play an important role during surgery. The suture is used to join or close the parts which are slit during operation or it can be used to close the wound. Textile materials are used for manufacturing sutures. The most preferred textile material to make sutures are silk and linen. Apart from this, synthetic textile materials like nylon, polyester were also used for making sutures. Braiding is the technology mostly used to make Sutures. The design or structure of suture is most important because different sutures used to meet many different needs. Handling characteristics and high strength are essential for the knotting of sutures. The simultaneous effects of braided sutures made up of silk filament were studied with respect to parameters such as filament twist (0-6 Twist/inch), braiding angle (28.8°- 34.8°), and braid structure (1/1, 1/2 and 2/2) on tensile strength, elongation, bending stiffness, and friction were investigated by using response surface methodology. The influence of independent and dependent values has been studied using the categorical central composite design of experiments. The optimum conditions for enhanced handling characteristics of braided silk suture were: 3.7 twist /inch of silk filament twist level, at a 28.8 degree braid angle, and a 1/2 braided structure. The handling characteristics of the suture can be enhanced by choosing suitable braiding parameters. The antibacterial activity of ethanol, methanol, and chloroform extracts of Acanthus ilicifolius leaves has been investigated for medicinal application. The chemical composition of extract has analysed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. | |
