Abstract: Nowadays, many things around us are becoming Smart as they are connected to the internet, such as Smart Watches, Camera, TV, Mobile, Security systems etc. Hence these devices are considered as Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The IoT is an overgrowing phenomenon. Many things around us are becoming smart as they connect to the internet. However, more connections to the internet make it easier for attacks to come from many directions. One major problem with IoT devices is that they are manufactured in bulk and set up in groups. So, most IoT devices already in use keep their default username and password for authentication. So, it is easy to break into these devices and control them. For example, a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack was used in the Botnet attack that took down the Domain Name System (DNS) and many other important sites. The attack set up its botnet using the default username and password combinations on IoT devices to break into them. One technique to prevent brute-force authentication is layer-based authentication for all IoT connections. This work outlines an architecture for IoT device authentication using Ethereum. This work also discusses how to identify and prevent botnets in IoT devices.
