Performance Analysis of Switched Reluctance Motor for Possible Applications in Electric Vehicles

Abstract

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are increasingly being considered for automotive applications, particularly in electric and hybrid vehicles, due to their numerous advantages over other electric machine types. These advantages include high starting torque, cost-effectiveness, simplicity of manufacturing, and reduced maintenance costs. However, there are still research gaps that need to be addressed in order to improve the performance and suitability of SRMs for electric vehicle (EV) applications. The research work begins with a sensitivity analysis that investigates sixteen different materials for the stator and rotor of the switched reluctance motor (SRM). The aim is to identify a material that possesses desirable characteristics, including lower weight, reduced losses, higher efficiency, and increased torque.
