In Vitro Studies on Effects of Carbon Nanotubes on Neuronal Cell Line

Abstract

Single and Multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been used in biological applications due to their excellent properties for targeted drug delivery, diagnosis of diseases, and as scaffolds for regeneration. However, their extensive application in biology is stifled by toxicity issues. The present study focuses on understanding the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and antioxidant status of LN18 neuronal cells on treatment with pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), carboxylic functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-SWCNT), pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and carboxylic functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNT). Countermeasure strategies using extrinsic antioxidants to mitigate oxidative stress in LN18 cells on treatment with the CNTs have also been studied. Concentrations in the range of 0-40 and#956;gmL-1 and time durations of 0-48 h were used for the assays.
