Abstract: India has an increasing need for energy to implement various newlinesocio-economic development programs. Renewable energy sources like solar, newlinewind and bio-mass play an important role in ensuring sustainable energy newlinethrough low emissions. The development of simplified models for PV array, newlineDC-DC converter and inverter and also the development of simplified newlinealgorithms for power flow to AC grid are of interest in the study of renewable newlineenergy and have motivated the researcher to take up the present research newlinework. Initial studies on commercial and residential PV systems are carried newlineout. Based on the field data collected from a 43kWp commercial grid newlineconnected solar power plant at IIT Jodhpur, an equivalent analytical model of newlinethe plant is developed. The results from the model mimics the field data. newlineAnother 1kW, 250 V residential roof top PV system at Chennai is also newlinestudied. Four different models are developed for tracking maximum power newlinepoint voltage and power. The look-up table model is found to have relatively newlinebetter tracking characteristics. Two more models are developed for studying newlinethe transient and steady-state performances of the roof-top PV system under newlinesudden changes in temperature, insolation and load and the state-space model newlineis found to have good transient and steady state performances. newline A boost DC-DC converter is designed for interfacing a 1 kW, newline415 V PV system with a DC micro grid. Analytical and Simulink models are newlinedeveloped to evaluate the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of the newlineboost converter under sudden supply and load disturbances with PI and 1-D newlinelook up table type feed forward controllers. newline
