A brief overview of adsorption profile in the treatment of water contaminated with dyes and pigments are taken into consideration for discussion in detail. Adsorption is suitable alternative in terms of economical as well as performance aspects. Activated carbon is one of the most widely used absorbent for the removal of colored dyes and heavy metals from wastewater. Though expensive, the research is being carried out for the development of more effective, economical and eco-friendly adsorbents. Several bio materials or agricultural by-products have been used as adsorbents because of their porosity, high adsorption efficiencies, low cost and abundance in nature. A literature survey was carried out on the use of bio adsorbents in the removal of dyes from water and wastewater. In the present work, the precursors of activated carbon such as Nerium Oleander leaves, Tithonia Diversifolia leaves, Artabotrys Hexapetalus seed pods, Tecoma Stans seed pods and Hedyotis Umbellate bark are selected for its richness in crude polysaccharides and glycosides (lignocellulosic) and its nil economic value. These values make them highly competitive with commercial activated carbon and other adsorbents. These agro by-products not only provide inexpensive adsorbent but also save the environment from the pollution and possess effective adsorption capacity. The carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups present in these adsorbents react with dye molecule in aqueous solution through hydrogen bonds. The prepared activated carbons are oxidized and iron impregnated to modify the surface morphology. newline newline newline
