Failure and Capacity aware optimal controller placement in Software Defined Networks

Abstract

quotABSTRACT newlineSoftware Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging networking architecture paradigm that decouples newlinecontrol plane from data plane. Although a single controller is sufficient to manage the entire newlinenetwork, the use of a single controller can pose problems in relation to reliability, scalability, newlineand latency. To circumvent these problems, usually multiple controllers are deployed in an SDN. The newlineproblem of determining the number and locations of controllers in the network and assigning newlineswitches to them is known as Controller Placement Problem (CPP). Even with the use of multiple newlinecontrollers, the failure of a controller can still cause problems in relation to reliability and newlinelatency because the switches assigned to the failed controller will experience disconnections until newlinethey are reassigned to a nearest working controller with enough residual capacity and also the newlinereassignment might result in drastic increase in worst-case switch to controller latency.
