Abstract: | The research facilitates important insight into stone as a material, related tools/equipment, factors critical to the physical process of stone carving, and the listing of various stages of stone sculpting. In essence, this thesis revisits and contextualizes the conventional and transforming technological approaches to an age-old practice of stone carving. Likewise, aspects such as sculpture symposiums and workshops have been looked into in detail, tracing its history and relevance in the contemporary practice of stone sculptures. In addition, the research sheds valuable light on the challenges that affect contemporary practice in the medium of stone. Factors such as logistics, costing, appropriate studio facilities pertinent to stone carving, receptivity of the medium in art colleges, and deficient support from art galleries are some of the listed concerns. newlineThrough an analytical approach, the research articulates individualistic predilections, concepts, and techniques of identified sculptors. The listing and documentation of sculptors specific to stone and their expression are pursued to update and further supplement the understanding of the comprehensive Indian sculptural practice, related areas, and other extensions from a fresh viewpoint. As an outcome, this research attempts to establish stone as an independent medium and its extension in multi-medium expression, contextual relevance, and significance of stone sculptures within the holistic Indian practice of sculpture-making, and as a medium for quasi-abstraction through numerous intellectual interventions. newline newline |
