Campus slang informal speech at Panjab University

Abstract

Campus slang, the unit of analysis in this thesis, is narrowed down subcategory of slang. Campus slang is a non-literary style of communication used among students of universities or colleges. There was no better place to conduct research than a university, where youth (students) who are the most innovative and dynamic users of language come together from different backgrounds, cultures, regions and evolve a certain kind of language which can sometimes be incomprehensible to the outsiders. The study is significant because it defines and monitors slang usage on the university campus and also observes the changing and continuously evolving patterns in slang usage at different levels of university life undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate; and the factors responsible for the same. After an initial pilot study, the researcher conducted a field study at the campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh. To conclude, it can be proposed that this research project is not the end rather it is a beginning for many researchers who possess an interest in languages and their varieties. newline
