Abstract: Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) has been a major challenge for urban areas in India. The aim of this socio-legal study wasto understand the current state of MSWM in the Indian state of Haryana, and to identify the legal and socio-economic factors contributing to this complex issue. newlineThis research employed a mixed methods approach, including a review of relevant legislation, policies, and courtto analyze the existing legal framework and socio-economic factors influencing MSWM in the state of Haryana. The study was conducted through an extensive literature review newlineand primary data collection through interviews and surveys. The results showed that the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 forms the legal basis for MSWM in the state. However, the lack of implementation and enforcement of these rules coupled with inadequate infrastructure and newlineresources has led to poor MSWM practices in most urban areas of the state. Various socio-economic factors such as awareness, education, and income level also play a significant role in determining the efficiency of MSWM. The study concludes with recommendations for improving the MSWM newlinesystem in Haryana, which includes better enforcement of rules, community participation, awareness campaigns, and improved infrastructure and resources. newline newline
