Abstract: The present study entitled A study on Empowerment of Rural Women through Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Lucknow district (U.P.) was undertaken with a view to analyze the socio-economic profile of the respondents followed by entrepreneur and income generation activities taken up by the respondents, attitude of the members and non-members towards working of self-help groups, relationship between independent variable (socio-economic) and dependent variable (attitude) of women members and non-members of self-help groups and constraints faced by rural women of self-help group and suggestion to overcome the constraints faced by them. Simple random sampling was followed for the study. Both purposive and random sampling procedure was followed for selection of districts, blocks, panchayats, villages and respondents. The total sample is 120 respondents. The response was obtained from each individual respondent through structured interview schedule developed for the collection of data. The collected data was tabulated and analyzed with the help of suitable statistical tools and techniques such as percentage, weighted score, weighted mean score rank, order etc. newlineThe findings of the study revealed that, majority 55.00 per cent of the respondents were young middle age group with middle school level of education, 10.83 per cent having marginal land holdings, 40.00 per cent out of which majority of farmers were having medium income (64.16 per cent) annual income. Among distribution according to material possession 75.83 percent were having bicycle. Among mass media and print media radio, television, newspaper and magazines were the main and most credible source of information. From the study it was revealed that income generating activities were also playing huge part in empowerment of rural women such as dairy business which contribute 50.83 per cent followed by namkeen making which is 22.50 per cent.
