Giardia lamblia is one of the gastrointestinal protozoan parasites newlinewhich are responsible for widespread outbreaks of diarrhea worldwide The newline12 Mb genome of this deep branching eukaryote is distributed over 5 newlineChromosomes The genome of Giardia lamblia showed a simple and compact newlineOrganization The large amount of sequence data generated from the genome newlinesequencing projects still needs to be organized into functionally relevant newlineregulatory elements like promoters silencers enhancers and repressors for a newlinebetter understanding of the genome S MARs Scaffold Matrix Attachment newlineRegions are DNA sequences that tether the base of the chromatin loops to the newlinenuclear matrix S MARs have been classified as regulatory elements involved newlinein transcription control They organize the loops and domains in the newlinechromosome and delineate transcription units S MARs have been extensively newlinestudied in higher eukaryotes and they have been found to be associated with newlinegene organization and regulation of gene expression However the presence of newlinethese regulatory classes of elements has not been addressed in protozoan newlineparasites like Giardia newline newlineen_US
