dc.description.abstractIn this dissertation a comprehensive study of one type of the Flexible AC Transmission Systems FACTS controller the Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator DSTATCOM using the Voltage Source Converters VSC is carried out Among the FACTS controllers the STATCOM has the potential to solve a wide range of power quality issues in the transmission level Various types of multi level inverters have been used as power converters in STATCOM applications at the transmission level To newlineextend the use of the STATCOM to the distribution level the DSTATCOM is designed with simple voltage source converter and control algorithms In this thesis the DSTATCOM is used for maintaining the power quality of the grid at the distribution level The DSTATCOM is a VSC based reactive power compensation device It improves the power quality of the distribution system either by absorbing the required reactive power from the grid or by supplying the required reactive power to the grid newlineen_US
