The investigating material consisting of 115 genotypes (fifteen parents, fifty F1s and fifty F2s crosses) was sown on 27 November, 2019 in a randomized block design with three replications at crop research farm Nawabganj of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur. Each parent and F1 was planted in single row while each F2s was planted in two rows, of 3 meter long plot with spacing between rows 22.5 cm apart. Plant to plant distance was maintained 10 cm. All the recommended cultural practices were applied to raise good crop. The observations were recorded on 15 characters namely, Days to flowering (75%), Plant height (cm), Days to maturity, Number of productive tillers/ plant, Flag leaf area, Spike length (cm), Number of spikelets/spike, Number of grains/spike, Biological yield/plant (gm), Grain yield/plant (gm), Test weight/1000 grain weight (gm), Harvest index (%),Seed Hardness, Phenol color reaction and Protein content (%). newlineThe analysis of variances for the experiment revealed highly significant variances among treatments for all characters indicating appreciable variability for the study. On partitioning of treatments variance, the mean sum of square of parents (line and tester), Lines × testers, lines Vs testers, F1s, F2s, parents Vs crosses (Parents Vs F1 and Parents Vs F2) and F1s Vs F2s were also found significant for almost all the traits indicating much variability in parents as well as in crosses developed by them. The selection of parents based on morphological differences was validated by analysis of variance. newline newline
