Abstract: The present study, on the basis of a comprehensive primary survey, examines the levels, patterns and determinants of private expenditure on secondary education in Haryana (India). The findings establish that households spend 7.22 per cent of their family income (per student per annum) on secondary education, and that there are stark differences in it by gender, caste, class, household s educational capital, and by type of school. The study finds that around 44 per cent of the student-respondents under the study access supplemental educational services, and there are strong socio-economic and institutional inequalities in its access and household expenditure on it. newline
