dc.description.abstract | With advancements in technology, people s living standards changed and consequently did the composition of waste due to increasing population, booming economy and rapid urbanization. Solid waste today includes plastic bags, cold drink cans and bottles, food waste, kitchen and glass wares, discarded clothes, garden waste, furniture waste, etc. It is looming large as a potential health and safety hazard for world populations. India s annual waste generated is likely to touch 387.8 million tonnes in 2030 and 543.3 million tonnes by 2050. On a daily basis, the country produces more than 1.50 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of solid waste, according to a 2019, India Today report. With almost 15,000 MT of garbage remaining exposed every day, it has become a significant reason for rising pollution levels. The present study is based on the objectives: to study the volume of generation of domestic solid waste in the Tri-city, to study the patterns of a collection of domestic solid waste in the Tri-city, to study the methods of disposal of domestic solid waste in the Tri-city, to study the impact of dumping sites and garbage bins on the health of people residing nearby. For studying the domestic solid waste management in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) a vast quantity of data has been collected from the respective areas from primary and secondary sources. The study area is comprised of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar or Mohali and is collectively addressed as the Tri-City region. newline | |
