Impact Assessment of provisions of infrastructure housing and livelihood for urban poor case of Hyderabad

Abstract

This research focuses on exploring and understanding urban poverty with particular reference to social support and empirical evidence of the relationship between housing conditions, health, education, livelihood and quality of life. newlineIn Hyderabad many projects for urban poor have been completed under various government schemes. newlineFrom literature review, it found that many initiatives for urban poor have been taken up in India, but impact studies of these are nominal. It is also found that quality of life of the urban poor is improved by the provision of housing, basic services and also socio economic support i.e., skill development to sustain their livelihood. Hence, this study aims to make a scientific inquiry into how the initiatives for the urban poor with respect to housing, basic services and livelihood have impacted on their quality of life into a specific context of urban poor living in slums of Hyderabad. newlineThe findings reveal that provision of housing and basic services together has not only improved their health hygiene condition and social status in slums but also the women were able to contribute to the overall income of the household. newlineIt was found that provision of housing and basic services does impact the quality of life of urban poor to some extent like, better health and hygiene, and livelihood development opportunities also improved the economic status. Therefore, it is emphasized that housing, basic services and livelihood opportunities and other social aspects for the poor to adopt to the housing need to be considered within the context of urban planning. Such inquiries can be extended further in slums in other cities as well with different socio- cultural backgrounds and compared with these findings to evolve a model pattern that will overall improve the quality of life of urban poor. newline newline
