Abstract: | The literature review reveals that most of the work has been carried out newlinefor the design of filters to protect non cohesive base material The studies newlineinvolving protection of cohesive base soils and mixed bases ie bases containing newlinedifferent percentages of cohesive and non cohesive content are relatively few in newlinenumber and are mostly empirical In the present study an attempt has been made newlineto evolve a procedure for the design o f filters based on the logical configuration newlineo f non uniform assembly sphere filter mass to protect the cohesive soils with and newlinewithout non cohesive content For this purpose experimental work has been newlinecarried out with different combinations o f cohesive and non cohesive base newlinematerial obtained from different localities of Kashmir Valley A variety of newlinerounded granular filter material was used with different base combinations for the newlinepurpose o f investigating filter performance Filters have been designed on the newlinebasis o f design controlling size Filter base combination tests for stability particle newlinemigration washout etc with slot to resemble cracks in cohesive soils and newlinewithout slot in the base have been carried out This has been done to ascertain the newlinepresence of percentage o f cohesive soil content in the non cohesive soils upto newlinewhich the design criteria based on the design controlling side can hold good in newlineorder to fulfill the two basic requirements of filters and to evolve a design newlineprocedure to protect the cohesive bases with and without a limited non cohesive newlinecontent |
