dc.description.abstract | Police constitute any State s major agency which is entrusted with the task of maintenance of law and order in that State. Though it has various other tasks assigned to it as well, this one remains indispensable. Looking at the existing system of how the Police functions, it is found that the Police works in a reactive manner as opposed to the proactive one. This means that the Police act and deal with the offence after the incident occurs. Police, then, indulge into processes like arrests, investigation involving visiting crime scene, interrogating victim and witnesses, collecting evidence etc. The policing activities mainly pertain to three functions which are crime control, maintenance of order and service to the community. The function of crime control in a society includes responding to and investigate offences and also to work towards the prevention of crime. Maintenance of order refers to the prevention and control of activities that result in disturbing the peace of public in a society. The third function provides for various services to the community. newline | |
