Abstract: In the present study, contours of ecological consciousness will be examined in the fiction of Northeast India with special reference to Temsula Ao s These Hills Called Home: Stories from a War Zone and Laburnum for My Head, Dhruba Hazarika s Luck, Sons of Brahma and A Bowstring Winter, Mamang Dai s The Legends of Pensam, Mitra Phukan s The Collector s Wife and Janice Pariat s Boats on Land. newlineThe thesis consists of seven chapters. The first chapter entitled highlights the age-old relevance of nature and its creatures in the Indian society as well as Indian literature including Vedas and Upanishads. The chapter introduces the theory of Ecocriticism as its studies the relationship between man and his relationship to the physical environment. Afterwards, the chapter provides the biographical details of the selected writers and a study of their works in the light of the theory of Ecocriticism. newlineThe second chapter acquaints the reader about the philosophy of deep ecology and perusal of the selected works in the pretext of the philosophy. The third chapter brings in the ideology of Ecofeminism and traces its origin and development. The chapter further studies the works of the selected writers from the Northeast in the view of the introduced ideology. newlineThe fourth chapter provides information about Oikopoetics and its various types. The chapter aspires to anatomize the works in view of the given concept and find out the various types of oikos(es) in those works. The fifth chapter lets the reader know of the concept of Ecocide and its need in the contemporary era. Further, the chapter attempts to do an in-depth study to ascertain the concept of Ecocide in the selected works. newlineThe sixth chapter provides brief knowledge about Haugen s Ecolinguistics. The chapter also surveys the use of symbolism, narrative technique, use of Figures of Speech and use of imagery by the writers to appeal to the sight and sense of the readers. newlineThe last chapter entitled Conclusion presents a comparative study of the selected writers and their works based on thematic and stylistic techniques. It also projects the relevance of the research work. newline newline
