Observations and Simulation of the Coastal Atmospheric Boundary Layer over the Indian Northeast Monsoon Region

Abstract

The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) plays a major role in day-to-day human activities as well as to all living being of the Earth. Since the ABL evolution and its height are closely related to the weather phenomena such as precipitation, cloud formation, fog and frost, and pollution dispersion. The ABL height is one of the key input parameters as the length scale for the air pollution dispersion modelling and various atmospheric and climate modelling systems. Thus, understanding of ABL is very essential to predict the local weather conditions and its various key parameters such as surface winds, temperature, humidity and visibility over a particular region. Though there are several studies have been carried out over different parts of the globe, the continuous monitoring of the ABL is still scant mainly due to limitation of the measurement capability. Micro pulse Lidar is a suitable tool for monitoring continuous observation of ABL and MPL was setup at the Kattankulathur (12.83o N, 80.04o E), located about 23.9 km away from the coast newline
