Abstract: This study was undertaken to examine the married women s attitude, awareness and knowledge regarding equal inheritance rights as per the Hindu succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 as well as the challenges faced by them in assessing their rights. The research focussed on married women having brother/s. The research was undertaken in Sangrur district of Punjab. 200 respondents were selected from 20 villages of 10 blocks in district Sangrur . Purposive sample was taken through snow ball technique. Both qualitative and quantitative data was gathered. Structured interview schedule with closed and open questions was employed. Case studies of disputed cases were collected. Frequency tables and Chi-square tables were made. Chi square test was performed to check association of attitude, awareness, knowledge and factors with age, education, employment and income. Majority of the respondents were aware but they did not had knowledge about equal inheritance rights as per the Hindu succession (Amendment) Act, 2005. Fear of spoiling relationship with natal family came out to be biggest social challenge faced by them in assessing their right. newline
