Abstract: The therapeutic applications of plant extracts have been exploited by mankind since the advent of civilization. The ancient traditional system of medicine depicts the synergistic relationship of humans with natural products. The birth of Ayurveda in the Indian subcontinent nearly in 1000 BC opened a plethora of herbs, medicinal plants, and mineral-based drug formulations. In, the fact the preliminary focus behind the classification and cultivation of plants was associated with their applications in curing numerous human ailments. Natural products were seen as a prime source of medicines by the end of the 19th century due to the recognition of the mode of their action as well as their synthesis on an industrial scale. Nevertheless, synthetic chemistry has produced a variety of bioactive leads and the use of combinatorial techniques has significantly expanded the arena of testing the compounds but still, natural products and their derivatives have more share of popularity in the market. Chemists in India have contributed in an extraordinary way to the chemistry of plant products. India is gifted with a plethora of fauna, making it a major area of interest to chemists. The World Health Organization (WHO) has observed that a major part of the rural population (80%) in developing countries depend on herbal or alternative medicine encouraging the utilization of safe indigenous resources. newline
