In the 1950s, artificial fibers such as aramid, boron, carbon, glass, kevlar, nylon and polyester were widely used for reinforcement in polymer composites. They are made from crude oils, which are non-renewable energy sources and are not biodegradable resulting in the generation of solid waste, which pollutes the environment severely. Massive shifts in public awareness of pollution, waste disposal and environmental protection, advances in material science and engineering design concepts and changes in government legal laws have paved the way for developing biodegradable natural fiber reinforced composites. newlineThe need for ecologically friendly and lightweight materials in the automotive and structural sectors has prompted material scientists to expand their research into natural fiber reinforced polymer composites. Even though there are many natural fibers available in the world, only a small number have been extracted and identified as potential reinforcement in the advancement of polymer matrix composites. Natural fibers are a free resource that can be used to reinforce a polymer matrix in need to create a light and strong material for structural applications. newlineNatural fibers derived from renewable plant sources are inexpensive, recyclable, fully biodegradable and environmentally friendly. newline
