Abstract: Spirally welded (SW) tubes are being used in the pipeline industry for newlineoffshore oil and gas transportation worldwide. SW steel tubes have an newlineincreasing scope in the steel industry owing to their ease of fabrication without newlinethe requirement of separate die for rolling tubes of different lengths and newlinediameters. This spiral tube can be considered as one of the alternatives to the newlineconventional column in high-rise buildings. However, the fundamental data on newlinespiral columns is still insufficient and complex to be adopted in high-rise newlinebuildings. To use the SW tube as a structural member, adequate experimental newlinedata and design methods are required. newlineIn this study to understand the behaviour of plain and chequered SW newlinesteel columns detailed experimental, theoretical and numerical investigation has newlinebeen carried out. A preliminary investigation was carried out based on newlineexperimental data available in literature to arrive at the helix angle ( ), pitch newlineand diameter to thickness (D/t) ratio. This data was used to validate the finite newlineelement (FE) model developed using ABAQUS version 6.13. The developed newlineFE model was used to carry out studies on 300 models to understand the newlineinfluence of parameters like , pitch, D/t ratio, weld thickness and overlapping newlineof pitch on the load- carrying capacity of SW columns. Studies were carried out newlineto check the influence of these parameters on SW columns and finalize the newlineparameter variations for the experimental test program newline
